Macron: EU must not allow itself to be paralyzed

strasbourg - The European model with respect for minorities and the individual and freedom of expression is unique in the world. The EU must therefore not allow itself to be paralyzed by anti-European or authoritarian developments in member states. French president Emmanuel Macron said this in the European Parliament, which he believes is the engine behind European compromises.
The parliament was eagerly awaiting the first speech by the strongly European-minded Macron. The president fiercely defended liberal democracy and called it the best weapon against increasing nationalism in Europe.
Macron argued for more debate on European values in the run-up to the European elections in 2019. He said that France is willing to contribute more to the European budget, provided the money is spent more efficiently.
According to the president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, the speech showed that 'the real France is back. '
