Macedonia comes with referendum on name country

World May 30, 2018 13:09

skopje - Macedonians are allowed to speak in a referendum this year about the possible name change of their country. The plebiscite must take place in September or October, Prime Minister Zoran Zaev said.

Zaev says that negotiations with Greece on the issue are 'in the final stage'. He refuses to say under which name his country should continue, 'because there is no definitive agreement yet'. News website MKD reports that the possibility to rename the country to 'Northern Macedonia' has been discussed.

The neighboring countries have been in the clinch about the name issue for decades. The bickering began in 1991, when Macedonia peacefully separated from Yugoslavia and continued as the independent Republic of Macedonia. Greece, which has its own region Macedonia in the north, asked the neighboring country to choose a different name and to abandon all ambition for area reunification.
