- The longest railway tunnel in the world is opened Wednesday in Switzerland in the presence of many distinguished guests, including the entire Swiss government, French President Francois Hollande, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

The 57 kilometer long tunnel under the St. Gotthard Pass is part of a European project to simplify include freight train through the Alps and will be much cheaper.

The Gotthard Base Tunnel is made almost entirely according to plan in seventeen years for the price of 11 billion euros. Switzerland has paid for everything himself and is proud of the result.
