riga - The Russian navy started rocket testing on the Baltic Sea on Wednesday, which led to measures in Latvia. Riga says it has temporarily had to close the airspace for commercial flights.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced on Monday that its Baltic fleet was preparing routine exercises, including the missile tests. The exercises take place in the so-called exclusive economic zone of Latvia, just outside the territorial waters of that country.
'It is a demonstration of power', concludes Latvian Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis. According to Riga, the Russian exercises have never been so close.
Sweden, on the other side of the sea, declared the training area to be a danger zone and is responsible for seafaring and air traffic.
