geneva - Due to wars, violence and persecutions, 16.2 million people were displaced last year. This is stated in a report from the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR, which was released on Tuesday.

The total number of people worldwide on the flight was 68.5 million by the end of 2017. According to UNHCR, this is a record number for the fifth consecutive year, mainly caused by conflicts in countries such as Congo, South Sudan and Myanmar.

Of the 68.5 million refugees and asylum seekers, 40 million were internally displaced at the end of 2017, and more than 25 million sought refuge elsewhere. A further asylum claim waited for more than 3 million people. According to the UNHCR, Turkey receives the most refugees, namely 3.5 million. Relative to the number of inhabitants per country, Lebanon is the country that receives the most refugees.

Despite the fact that the number of displaced persons continues to grow, the High Commissioner for Refugees keeps hope. According to Filippo Grandi, the international community is at a turning point and countries are working on a way to act decisively during refugee crises.
