World January 2, 2016 17:42

- With the execution of 47 men who had been convicted of terrorism, including the prominent Shiite cleric Nimr, king Salman of Saudi Arabia wanted to send a message. Which states that it is prepared to use all means to deal with resistance, whether it comes from the Shiite minority in their own country or terror group Islamic State. That says German expert Guido Steinberg against the news agency DPA.

According to Steinberg, the mass execution primarily a signal IS, which in neighboring Iraq has advanced to the borders of the Saudi kingdom, and the sympathizers of IS in Saudi Arabia.
He calls it ironic that Nimr was slain, because the only organized peaceful protests against the government of Salman. The cleric was arrested several times before, the last time in 2012. That arrest eventually led to his death sentence.
