Kidnapped Canadian freed after five years

ottawa - A Canadian man who five years ago was kidnapped by the Taliban in Afghanistan on charges of spying, was freed with the help of Qatar, said Foreign Minister Stefan Dion Monday.


         Dion gave no details about the liberation operation of Colin Rutherford. The Taliban left in February 2011 that the Canadian was kidnapped. According to local media, however, he had been missing since the end of 2010.
In a video which came out in May 2011, said the then 26-year-old Rutherford that he was in Afghanistan as a tourist and denied working for the Canadian government.
Canada had a military mission in Afghanistan between 2001 and 2011, during which 158 soldiers were killed.
