damascus - The Syrian army has split the rebel stronghold East Ghouta almost in two. A commander from the government army said that the strip connecting the northern and southern parts of the enclave is only one kilometer wide.

He said that this link is within range of the army. A rebel spokesman denied that the enclave almost fell into two parts.

At the start of the Syrian offensive on 18 February, the jihadist stronghold was still more than 60 square kilometers in size. Now at most 30 square kilometers. Russia, ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has told the rebels that they can go to another area with their families that is under the control of insurgents.
