Jerusalem builds underground cemetery

jerusalem - Under the famous Har Hamenuhot cemetery in Jerusalem, pressure is currently being drilled and scooped. Under the hill a new burial site will be constructed where 22,000 to 24,000 dead can be buried. Jerusalem has no place for the dead above ground.

The new complex will be delivered complete with lifts, ventilation systems and lighting. The municipality has to pay in exchange 48 million euros. According to the authorities, such a cemetery is unique in the world. Work started in 2014.

Several underground burial spaces are connected to each other and have a total length of 1.5 kilometers. The first funeral is expected to take place in the first half of 2019.
