fort lauderdale - The man who five people Friday (local time) shot dead at the Fort Lauderdale airport is very likely an Iraq veteran. It would be the 26-year-old Esteban Santiago. This was reported by the local sheriff.

Probably the shooter acted alone. The FBI maintains the authorities still open all scenarios, including terrorism. However, he was not sight on the radar of intelligence because of possible links to terrorists.

Santiago, who was wearing a military ID card in his arrest with him, had told FBI agents in November that his mind was controlled and he heard voices. He was then sent to a mental institution, said an anonymous source in the judiciary.

The veteran served from 2007 to 2016 in the National Guards of Puerto Rico and Alaska. With the first, he was from April 2010 to February 2011 deployed to Iraq., He came back as 'another person', said an aunt on US broadcaster MSNBC.

Alaska Santiago was guilty of three minor offenses: in 2015 he committed a traffic offense and he could show no proof of insurance. He was convicted in 2016 for inflicting material damage.

During his service he received several military awards. In August he was transferred because of inadequate performance to the reservists. Santiago lived in Alaska where he worked for a security company.
