Iraq starts offensive against IS at Syria

baghdad - The Iraqi armed forces have launched an offensive against the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group in an area on the border with Syria south of the River Euphrates.

The offensive in the Akashat region, which has natural gas reserves, is intended to pave the way for the conquest of militant occupied cities in the river valley of the Euphrates. This includes the border post of al-Qaim, according to the army Saturday.
