Iran wants to lift stadium ban for women

teheran - The Iranian authorities are working hard to lift the stadium ban for women at football matches. That reports the Iranian news agency Isna.

'The issue is high on the government agenda this year and we are trying to find a suitable solution,' said Masumeh Ebtekar, Vice President of Family and Women Affairs. To facilitate access for women to stadiums, special women's stands have to be built.

In Iran, women have not been allowed to enter stadiums for nearly forty years. According to the influential clergy in the country there is no place for Muslim women in football stadiums with crazy male fans and vulgar slogans.

The Ministry of Sports had previously proposed a stand for the family, but that plan was also rejected by the clergy. Especially women can not follow the important football matches in the stadium. In recent months, however, women are always present in the stadiums. The trick: they dress up like men.
