Iran prohibits Telegram

World April 30, 2018 16:03

teheran - Iran has banned the widely used chatapp Telegram. The decision is 'based on the requirements of security services for tackling illegal activities of Telegram', reports the state television of the Islamic Republic. Iran had already banned officials from using Telegram.

Around the turn of the year, there were many demonstrations in Iran. The demonstrators were dissatisfied with, among other things, price increases, corruption suspicions and the lack of economic progress. Protesters who wanted to communicate with each other used Telegram and other social media. Telegram is therefore already temporarily blocked.

Telegram had previously been blocked by Russia. However, Telegram and its users succeed in circumventing that. Many other sites were actually unreachable. Russia was angry because Telegram refused to give the keys to read messages to the secret service FSB. Telegram was set up by the brothers Nikolaj and Pavel Doerov. They were previously rich with the social network VKontakte, the 'Russian Facebook'. The brothers turned their backs on Russia a few years ago.
