Iran forbids English in primary schools

dubai - Iran has banned English lessons in primary schools after Islamic leaders warned against a Western 'cultural invasion.'

A senior government official said on Iranian state television that English education in the official curriculum is 'against laws and regulations'. According to the head of the Iranian Council for Higher Education, basic education should be the basis for the Iranian culture of the pupils. English lessons would mean 'promotion of a foreign culture'. English is mainly given in secondary schools in Iran, but some primary schools also start with English.

Although in the announcement of the ban no connection was made with the ongoing protests in the country, Iranians did make that association by filtering English in jokes on social media compared with blocking the popular app Telegram during the demonstrations.
