washington - Gina Haspel, who has been pushed forward to lead the CIA, wanted to withdraw her candidacy. She said that according to sources from The Washington Post Friday during a discussion in the White House about her involvement in the controversial interrogation program of the intelligence service. Then she returned to the CIA headquarters in Langley.

The appointment of Haspel to CIA director has yet to be approved by the Senate. Haspel reportedly feared to be firmly challenged about her past. That could possibly damage her reputation and that of the CIA. Haspel, for example, supervised a secret CIA prison in Thailand in 2002, when at least one suspect was being boarded. The suspect gets the feeling that he is drowning.

Employees of the White House would have traveled to Langley for talks with Haspel. President Trump would also have made it clear that she wanted to maintain her as a candidate to succeed Mike Pompeo in the intelligence service. Haspel finally decided not to withdraw, the sources say.
