teheran - Hundreds of dead sharks have been washed ashore on the Iranian island of Shif. Presumably the sharks were caught for their fins and then thrown back into the water, after which they were driven towards the island.

A kilo of shark fin gives illegal fishermen about 1.70 euros, said a spokesperson for an Iranian environmental protection organization against the Iranian news agency IRNA.

Shark fishing has been banned in Iran for three years, because the animals were threatened with extinction. Who is caught gets a fine of about 6000 euros.
