- Htin Kyaw is the new president of Myanmar. The parliament in the country chose the 69-year-old friend and confidant of party leader Aung San Suu Kyi of the National League for Democracy (NLD) Tuesday with a relatively narrow majority.
Htin Kyaw is the first president in Myanmar since the sixties who has no military background.
The NLD achieved a huge victory in the elections, but Suu Kyi can not become president himself. She was married to a Briton and children of British nationality. The law requires that such a person can not fulfill the highest office.
Htin Kyaw received 360 of the 632 votes in parliament where his party has an absolute majority. He performs on April 1 as head of state. The two other candidates in the election, Henry Van Thio from the Chin minority and pushed forward by the military Myint Swe, to be vice president.
