athens - Heavy snowfall has turned large parts of northern and central Greece into a winter landscape. The state television (ERT) reported that hundreds of motorists were stuck all night until Saturday in a huge traffic jam about 100 kilometers north of Athens. Several trucks were stranded on the icy roads at this important north-south axis. The problem could only be solved in the early Saturday morning.

'Now it is slowly moving again. We wanted to celebrate Christmas in our village in northern Greece and were stuck here on the highway for more than six hours, 'said a car driver for Greek radio. The traffic police imposed a driving ban for trucks on the motorways for the next 48 hours.

There were also problems with air traffic. Because of the snowstorm, two flights from Brussels and Lisbon had to move to the island of Kos.

Many rural roads in the center of Greece were only passable with snow chains on Saturday. The rare chance of a white Christmas in Greece, according to prognoses of meteorologists, looks good for the hilly and mountainous regions in the middle and north of the country.
