vienna - The head of Inspections of the International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA has unexpectedly resigned on Friday. The UN organization announced the resignation of Tero Varjoranta, without mentioning a reason.

Varjoranta was also deputy director at the atomic agency. As Chief Inspectorates, the Fin supervised compliance with the non-proliferation treaty, which must restrict the possession of nuclear weapons. Varjoranta is being replaced by Massimo Aparo, who led the team overseeing Iran's nuclear activities.

The resignation comes at a sensitive time. Earlier this week, the US announced that they are withdrawing from the Iran deal. President Donald Trump says, among other things, that Iran does not adhere to the core agreements, while the nuclear agency maintains that Iran is fulfilling the agreements.
