lebanon - According to a UNRWA spokesperson, Fateh Sherif, the recently killed Hamas leader in Lebanon, was also an employee of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.

Fateh Sherif worked for the refugee agency as a teacher and school principal. In March, he was suspended following allegations about his 'political activities'. Rumors circulated about his Hamas membership, but his exact role within the group was unclear. After his suspension, there were protests in front of the UNRWA headquarters in Beirut in support of Sherif.

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized UNRWA for not firing Sherif immediately after his alleged Hamas affiliation came to light. Israel had previously accused twelve UNRWA employees of involvement in terrorist attacks. Some countries have stopped funding UNRWA in response. While there is no evidence of the organization having ties to terrorist groups, several employees have been dismissed over possible links to attacks.
