Government pulls controversial amnesty in Romania

bucharest - The Romanian government has withdrawn the controversial amnesty for some forms of corruption. That is a result of mass protests against the proposed measure.

Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu on Sunday in a cabinet meeting formally decided to abandon the plan. The scheme would only abuse of office are punishable as fraudulent converted amount exceeds 50 000. Grindeanu argued that the prisons are overcrowded and that it is with this scheme a lot of detainees. He also said that the measures criminal law into line with recent decisions of the Supreme Court.

But the past few days, hundreds of thousands of Romanians took to the streets to protest against the regime. President Klaus Iohannis, justice watchdog CSM and the Ombudsman of Romania complained to the Constitutional Court. Internationally, there was criticism.
