Girl (5) with dreadlocks can go from judge to school

kingston - A school in Jamaica must allow a girl of five in spite of her dreadlocks. That has determined the highest court in the country. The school had told the child's mother that the girl was only admitted if she cut her long curls.

The mother thought that the dreadlocks are an 'expression of the black identity' and did not pick it up. She was supported by the Jamaicans for Justice organization, which successfully presented the case to the court.

Jamaica is known for the reggae music and Rastafarias who generally wear dreadlocks. The mother of the girl stated that she was not a follower of Rastafari.

In Jamaica, children were previously refused by schools because of their hairstyle.
