The discussion was about 'the bilateral relations' and 'the difficult issues and expectations of both sides', according to a Twitter statement from the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Çavusoglu placed the same short message on his Twitter account in Turkish and English.

The German-Turkish relations have been tense for months, partly because of the detention for political reasons by German citizens in Turkey. They are generally accused of supporting terrorist organizations.

The Turkish leadership demands from Germany the extradition of Turkish citizens who belong to the Gülen movement or the Kurdish Labor Party PKK.
