French protest against extension of emergency

- In several cities in France people have taken to the streets to protest against the planned extension of the state of emergency in the country. Several human rights organizations and the union of judges had called for the demonstrations. The protest is in addition to extending the state of emergency also on the plan to convicted terrorists take away French citizenship.

According to the radio station 'France Info' has been demonstrated at about eighty different locations.

After the attacks in November in Paris, French President Francois Hollande announced a state of emergency. This makes it easier for the authorities to place terror suspects under house arrest and to do house searches without a warrant.

The state of emergency applies now until February 26th. The plan is to extend that period by three months.
