mol - The famous Belgian ex-motorcrosser Eric Geboers is missing at recreational lake Miramar in the Belgian Mol. Geboers jumped out of a pleasure boat Sunday night to save a dog, but did not come up anymore. The local authorities fear the worst.

The 55-year-old Geboers, multiple world champion in the motocross, was, according to the VRT, together with some friends on a pleasure boat, when a small dog jumped on board. Geboers immediately jumped behind the animal. 'One of the other people on board also jumped into the water to save Geboers, but soon found himself in trouble because of the extremely cold water', says mayor Paul Rotthier.

The fire brigade searched until 01.00 in the night with divers, spotlights and a sonar boat. The search was resumed Monday morning.

Geboers is the first motocross racer ever to become world champion in all three classes: 125, 250 and 500 cc. In 1988 he became Sportsman of the Year in Belgium.
