rome - Italian president Sergio Mattarella has invited a former top official of the International Monetary Fund to come by on Monday. Reportedly, the Italian economist Carlo Cottarelli is the intended candidate to form an emergency government, now that a political and constitutional crisis in Italy is threatening.
Shortly after candidate prime minister Giuseppe Conte had returned his assignment to form a government, Cottarelli received a phone call from the presidential palace for a meeting Monday. Probably to ask him to form a new government.
Cottarelli was director of tax affairs at the IMF from 2008 to 2013. It is expected that a technocratic government under his leadership is only meant for the short term. The majority within the parliament had already indicated that they did not feel anything for such a business cabinet.
