brussels - Anyone smoking through Flanders with children up to sixteen years in the car can be fined up to EUR 1000. The smoking ban applies to tobacco products and electronic cigarettes. The Flemish government has approved a proposal on this subject from the ministers Joke Schauvliege (environment) and Jo Vandeurzen (Welfare, Public Health and Family).

'Smoking in the car causes up to 25 times higher concentrations of carcinogens than smoking in the house,' Schauvliege says. 'It is absolutely not enough to open a car window to remove these substances. '' Children breathe faster and their immune system, lungs and airways are still in full development, it motivates the measure.

The ban already exists in, among others, France, England, Australia and parts of the US and Canada. Dutch doctors also argued for a ban three years ago, but the House of Representatives thought that a bridge was too far-reaching.
