Fishermen end 'coquille war'

The conflict about the catch of scallops off the coast of Normandy went completely out of hand last month. Furious French fishermen scared colleagues from England and Scotland. The French are not allowed to remove scallops from the sea between 15 May and 1 October. The British are not bound by the prohibition of fishing and, according to French fishermen, are robbing the shells.

Representatives of the fisheries sectors from the two countries then tried to find a way out. They agreed that British ships longer than 15 meters will not fish for scallops in the next six weeks off the coast of Normandy. The French are compensated for fishing rights for other areas to their British colleagues.
