First migrants of Lifeline away from Malta

paris/valletta - The first group of migrants stranded on the Lifeline boat in Malta were taken up by another European country. The French Minister of the Interior, Gérard Collomb, has announced that 52 migrants from the Lifeline have arrived in his country.

The inclusion of these people indicates, according to Collomb, that his country expresses concrete solidarity with European neighbors who lie in the first line when it comes to the flow of refugees.

The lifeline boat of the German aid organization Mission-Lifeline has picked up about 230 inmates from the coast of Libya and headed for Italy. But that country did not want to allow the ship in June, just like Malta. In the end, Malta agreed to allow the vessel to join other EU countries in order to accommodate migrants. The Netherlands is one of the countries that has promised to do so.

The organizations such as Mission-Lifeline have a bad name in government circles in Italy and Malta. They are seen as organizations that encourage at least people smuggling. The captain of the Lifeline, Claus-Peter Reisch, is being prosecuted in Malta.
