- In Spain, the first event of the birth defect microcephaly established by a pregnant woman who was infected with the zikavirus. According to the health authorities in Spain thirteen women who have contracted the virus spread by mosquitoes while traveling abroad, but are otherwise not shown any abnormalities in them.

The zikavirus is linked to hundreds of cases of microcephaly in countries like Brazil. The birth defect characterized by babies with small heads and a brain abnormality.

Dozens of people in Spain and Europe are known to have contracted zika, usually after a stay in distant countries. But so far there are in this region, but few cases of babies who develop symptoms of microcephaly. There is a reported case in Slovenia of a woman who was pregnant when she was living in Brazil, but had to abort the fetus.

The woman in Spain has become infected by the dengue virus and zika- and the fetus shows signs of various deformities, health authorities said in the northern Spanish region of Catalonia. The twenty weeks pregnant woman decided according to Spanish media to keep the baby.

In Spain, a total of 105 cases of infection with the zikavirus, all due to travel abroad. In other countries such as France have also reported cases of zikavirus which is transmitted through sexual contact.
