bhubaneshwar - A man in the state of Odisha in North India has built an eight-kilometer-long road with only a pickaxe and a crowbar. He made the way with the goal that his school-age children can come home more often. The BBC reports this Thursday.

The 45-year-old Jalandhar Nayak lives in a remote village, about 10 kilometers from the school where his three sons study. It takes about three hours for the children to come home from the school because they have to climb five hills.

For the past two years he set out with his tools every morning and chopped the rocks for eight hours a day and removed boulders to build the road. The local authorities have told the BBC that they are phasing out the road.

Nayak said that he is 'very happy' that the road is being further developed by the government. He added that he also requested them to arrange electricity and drinking water for the village.
