Exitpoll Italy: Five star movement biggest party

rome - The exit polls of the Italian parliamentary elections show that the Five Star movement has clearly become the largest party, with around 30% of the votes. In the second place, afterwards, the center-left governmental party PD with some more than 20%.

This party is the big loser in this election. The PD is followed by the right-wing parties Forza Italia by Berlusconi and the Lega by Matteo Salvini. The latter two are coalition partners, but compete with each other who becomes the largest of the center-right coalition. Together they would be slightly smaller than the Five Star movement on her own.

The Five Star Movement was founded in 2009 by the comedian Beppe Grillo and is led by the 31 year old Luigi Di Maio. She is a protest movement against the political and economic establishment and can hardly be called left or right. The election polls had already indicated that the Five Star movement would become the biggest party. Especially in the poorer south of the country, the party is strongly represented.

Only when you reach a percentage of 40% do you have a majority in parliament with this electoral law. The Five Star movement has always said that it does not want to enter into a coalition with other parties. If she does not change her mind, it is unclear how she can govern. The center-right coalition (which includes two small parties besides Forza Italia and the Lega) would come up with a higher percentage as a whole, but it is now the big question whether it can achieve the 40%. In that case, center right can start to rule. The President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, will have to check with various party leaders in the coming period whether there is indeed a majority.

The Italians were able to vote until 23. 00 today. Before that time it was impossible and forbidden to show the exit polls.
