Ex-minister Zimbabwe maltreated

harare/johannesburg - The former Minister of Finance of Zimbabwe, Ignatius Chombo, is in the hospital after being mistreated by military personnel. This is what Chombo's lawyer said on Friday. The minister was an ally of Grace Mugabe, the wife of President Robert Mugabe, who was put aside on 14 November.

The army dropped Mugabe because Grace seemed to be the successor of the 93-year-old president. That was a bad thing for the military and the governing party ZANU. When the army actually committed a coup d'état last week, Chombo was immediately arrested in his home. According to South African and Zimbabwean media, there has been a gunfight between soldiers and bodyguards, of whom one has certainly died.

After the nightly arrest of Chombo, media photos of his house and suitcases, which were hit by numerous bullets, were full of American dollars. Ten million dollars would have been found in the home. It is unclear where Chombo was held for a week. Soldiers delivered him on Thursday at a police station in Harare.
