EU pulls for standards and values

- The EU must draw the wallet for aid clubs promoting European values ​​like democracy within the EU. The European Parliament demands that the European Commission come up with a concrete proposal for this.

A large majority of 489 against 137 MEPs agreed with the proposal. Parliament is demanding that the new fund be at least as large as the existing fund for the promotion of democracy outside the Union, and that the budget for the current multi-annual budget is over 1.3 billion euros.

The step is motivated by the fact that democratic values ​​are under severe pressure in countries such as Hungary and Poland. Many Dutch groups have voted in favor, but the VVD finds the change of course incomprehensible. Not only will it cost a lot of money, says VVD MEP Hans van Baalen, he also doubts whether it is useful to do at all.

'If you are going to do this from Brussels, those local organizations will be infected. This instrument is directly reflected in the face of Brussels ', says Van Baalen.
