brussels - The European Union is taking steps to impose sanctions against Myanmar because of the continuing murders and rapes by security forces in the state of Rohingya. EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs will commission Monday in Brussels to prepare punitive measures against high-ranking military personnel who are guilty of human rights violations.

EU foreign chef Federica Mogherini also has the task of making proposals to strengthen and expand the existing trade embargo on arms and other means by which the population can be oppressed.

The United Nations has labeled the operations of the army against the Rohingya Muslims as ethnic cleansing. More than 600,000 Rohingya have recently fled to Bangladesh. According to senior EU officials, there is agreement among EU ministers that the 'extremely serious situation' in Myanmar requires a response. Canada and the US have already instituted sanctions against army leaders.
