EU and London agreement on transitional period

World March 19, 2018 12:57

brussels - The EU reached an agreement in principle with the United Kingdom on a transitional period following the British departure on 29 March 2019. The British will remain part of the customs union and internal market until 1 January 2021. During this period, EU citizens can continue to settle freely in Great Britain. For the border between Ireland and (the British) Northern Ireland after the brexit, both parties continue to look for a solution.

These were agreed between Brussels and London after feverish negotiations in Brussels. During the transition period, the British remain involved in the decision-making on the European fish quotas, but have no further say about new or amended EU legislation.

According to EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier, the agreement that is presented to EU leaders on Friday is 'a decisive step in the negotiations on an orderly British departure'.
