EU: 20,000 migrants returned from Libya

brussels - In recent months, some 20,000 migrants have voluntarily returned to their homeland with international support from Libya. This is shown by figures from the European Union. EU foreign chef Federica Mogherini attributes this to the EU's cooperation with the African Union and the United Nations, as she said on Saturday during a visit to Libya.

The three alliances had set up a joint task force in November to keep people from coming to Europe and encouraging them to return.

Mogherini opened an EU representation in Libya. The EU is the largest donor of humanitarian aid and the main economic partner of the country, Mogherini said. The EU will strengthen cooperation with the government and local authorities and assist in the preparation of the elections.

Since the fall of dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, conditions in Libya are chaotic and the internationally recognized government hardly has any power. That is another reason why the country is a starting point for thousands of migrants who want to travel to Europe via the Mediterranean Sea.
