washington - Former FBI director James Comey made a 'serious error of judgment' in the Clinton affair, but he had no political intentions. This is stated in the report that the internal watchdog of the US Department of Justice published Thursday.

Comey announced shortly before the US presidential election to reopen the investigation into the use of a private e-mail server by the Democratic candidate Hillery Clinton. The conclusion is now that he did not do so to influence the election results.

Inspector General Michael Horowitz nevertheless voiced strong criticism in his report to the former FBI chief, for example because of violation of the policy rules in the department. He also accuses him of having taken over the authority of the then minister of justice Loretta Lynch when he announced in July 2016 that he would not prosecute Clinton for her e-mail behavior as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Comey said he did not agree with all the findings, but respects the work of Horowitz.
