Erdogan angry at conviction banker in US

istanbul - Turkish president Erdogan warned Friday that the legal agreements between the two countries 'lose their value.' He responded to the conviction of a Turkish banker who is stuck in the United States.

A court deemed Mehmet Hakan Atilla, a director of the Turkish state bank Halkbank, guilty on Wednesday to avoid American sanctions against Iran. Erdogan sees this as a political attack on his government.

'If this is the American explanation of justice, then the world is doomed,' Erdogan said at a press conference just before his departure to France for an official visit. 'Our bilateral legal relations and agreements lose their value. I'm sorry to say this, but that's the way it will be. 'He did not say which agreements were involved.

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the conviction Thursday as an unprecedented interference in an internal affair.
