tripoli - During heavy fighting between rival militias in the Libyan capital of Tripoli on Friday, tens of thousands of people were killed. The Libyan Ministry of Health reported 78 deaths, including citizens. About a thousand people got injured.

In Tripoli, two governments compete for the power: the internationally recognized 'government of national unity' and a self-named 'government of national salvation,' which is linked to Islamists. Last government troops attacked the 'unity government' on Friday. Eye witnesses in multiple neighborhoods spoke of heavy fights and columns of smoke over the city.

In the North African country, since the fall of then leader Muammar Kaddafi in 2011, there has been great chaos and civil war. The government of national unity was formed under the auspices of the UN, but its influence hardly exceeds Tripoli. In the east of Libya, a third 'government' demands power.
