Dozens killed by fighting in eastern Syria

deir al - When fighting between fighters of the Islamic State and the Syrian army in the eastern Syrian city of Deir al-Zor are certainly 82 people in recent days slain. This was reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights Monday.

The fighting broke out when IS wanted to occupy a part of the city controlled by Syria. It concerns the fiercest fighting in the city in one year.

Among the dead are 28 soldiers from the Syrian army and allied militias, especially forty IS fighters and fourteen civilians, according to the observatory.

IS has spent most of Deir al-Zor and around occupied since 2015, but Syria controls the airport and adjacent neighborhoods in the city on the Euphrates.

One by the US-backed coalition of Kurdish and Arab militias and rival Turkey backed Syrian rebel groups have Islamic State expelled from much of northern Syria, but in the eastern desert area makes it still in charge.

Last month recaptured IS unexpectedly the city of Palmyra, 185 kilometers southwest of Deir al-Zor.
