- President Danilo Medina of the Dominican Republic on Monday celebrated his reelection. According to preliminary results he achieved more than 60 percent of the vote.

But his victory is overshadowed by deadly violence. The counting of votes cast Sunday is slow.

After more than two thirds of the votes counted, Medina was 62 percent in the lead. His closest rival, Luis Abinader, had 35 percent, while the remaining 3 percent was divided among six other candidates.

The election campaign led to unrest in several provinces. When violence came six people dead.

The center-left Medina has made himself popular in the past four years with improvements in education and health care. The expenses were due to the rapid growth of the Dominican economy. The election rules were changed so that Medina could play a second term immediately following his first.
