mwanza - The number of deaths as a result of the capsized ferry on the Tanzanian part of Lake Victoria has increased to 136. A high police officer has reported this.

The small ferry tracked the connection between two islands in the south of Lake Victoria, Ukerewe and Ukora. There may be hundreds of victims. According to reports, far too many people were on board the ship de Nyerere, probably more than three hundred. The boat capsized near the island Ukerewe. On Thursday, 37 passengers could be saved.

Accidents with crowded boats are common on Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa. It lies between Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. In 1996 more than eight hundred people lost their lives on the lake when the MV Bukoba capsized. It was one of the biggest shipping disasters of the last century.
