Deadly Week for refugees at sea

World May 31, 2016 11:39

geneva - Certainly 880 migrants and refugees last week killed in their efforts to stabbing the Mediterranean. This said the refugee agency of the United Nations Tuesday with the publication of updated figures based on interviews with survivors who have been to Italy.

This year 'appears to be '' particularly lethal with 2510 lives lost so far by capsized boats, against 1855 in the same period last year, said UNHCR spokesman William Spindler.

'Smugglers load boats that barely seaworthy are full of people. What happens is that when they go to sea immediately call emergency services. Social workers are then to save them, '' says Spindler.' It's often a race against the clock to get there in time before the boats sinking. In some cases, they are late. ''
