Dead and wounded by the earthquake in India

World January 4, 2016 08:00

- At least four people were killed by a massive earthquake in the eastern Indian state of Manipur. Nearly a hundred people were injured. The epicenter of the quake with a magnitude 6.8 was about 22 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital, Imphal, according to the report from the US Geological Survey USGS.

The death toll is probably still on. Rescue work is hampered by power outages and communication lines severed. According to local authorities, there has never felt such a heavy earthquake in Imphal. Many people in the area were asleep at the time of the quake. Rooftops and staircases of some buildings have collapsed.

Some workers may be buried under the debris of a collapsed building that was still under construction. It is unclear how many people are involved.

People in Bangladesh, Myanmar and Nepal showed via Twitter to have felt the quake. In the capital of Dhaka, Bangladesh, people fled their homes, reported a correspondent of the BBC. To our knowledge there is no damage to buildings in Myanmar.
