Danish toddlers are obliged to childcare

World May 28, 2018 18:03

copenhagen - In Danish disadvantaged neighborhoods, childcare is mandatory after the first year of life. The main opposition party agreed on Monday with a proposal from the center-right government.

According to that plan, an estimated 700 toddlers have to go to the custodian school at least 25 hours a week from 2019 to encourage their development as early as possible.

The parents do not have to pay for this, refusal can lead to a discount on the child benefit.

The measure is part of a comprehensive program with which the Danish government is trying to prevent a new generation of people being displaced in certain areas, referred to as ghettos. Of these, 22 were selected on the basis of unemployment figures, convictions for offenses and the number of migrants living there.
