- Governor Terry McAuliffe of the US state of Virginia gives former prisoners the right to vote in the presidential election in November. It comes to about 200,000 people who have been detained for serious crimes.

In many states subject to the provision that those who have been imprisoned for serious crimes have the right to vote forever lost. The scheme is particularly civil rights organizations have long been a thorn in the eye. They welcome the decision of the governor. McAuliffe is a Democrat and fan of Hilary Clinton, who is likely to be the Democratic candidate. He seeks ex-convicts to give theirs forever back.

In the United States, writes The Washington Post, about 5.8 million people have lost their right to vote because of convictions.
