Ray (42) started a case for discrimination. His lawyers argued that sentenced people with the Christian faith should receive assistance from a clergyman. A federal court of appeal ordered postponement of execution, upon which the state presented the case to the highest court in Washington. That stated with 5 to 4 votes that the ban on assistance was lawful.
