the hague - The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has begun an investigation into attacks in the Syrian rebel stronghold East Ghouta. That is what sources in diplomatic circles say to Reuters news agency. The investigation must show whether prohibited ammunition has been used.

Among other things, researchers are looking into a Sunday attack. Local authorities in the area then stated that witnesses smoke chlorine after a 'huge explosion. 'The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights could not confirm whether an attack had actually been carried out with poison gas.

According to the sources, the OPCW team is not going to conduct an investigation in East Ghouta for safety reasons, where hundreds of people would have been killed in a week due to heavy shelling. The researchers will base themselves on testimonies, visual material and conversations with medical experts.
