peking - Foreigners are temporarily not welcome to Tibet. Due to the forthcoming Congress of the Communist Party, foreigners from 18 to 28 October can not visit the region. Only when the meeting has expired can the required permits be requested again, so the authorities have informed travel agencies in Beijing and Lhasa.
The party congress, held every five years, is the most important event on China's political calendar. For important events or birthdays, Tibet always locks for foreign visitors. There is a lot of unrest in the area and since 2009, more than 120 Tibetans have burned themselves to protest against Chinese rule.
It is expected that President Xi Jinping will use the forthcoming party congress to further strengthen his position. Observers also hope to receive signals about the economic rate that Xi wants to sail.
